Artist Statement
For years I accepted landscape as having a prescribed look. I live in a country with a strong tradition in the landscape genre. But, I refuse to trade totally in the currency of this established style.
A few years ago "maps.google.com" gave us a radical new view of our familiar space. Similarly the look of my paintings pushed to flatten the planes and create shape associations. Re-inventing the thought of landscape has changed the content of my works, forcing a re-examination of spacial relationships. The painting growth is dependent upon the tension suggested by these shapes.
Painting for me is like magic, what you see is not what you see at first take. The closer you get to the surface the more the picture fades away and the more the artwork is just about paint and texture. Within the marks you can re-engage your subject; recreate a snapshot in time; make a historical observation, or possibly record the glimpse of a current dream.
